Tenchi Novels?

I might be misunderstanding a few things, but in updating myself as to the
content of usenet, i came across references to 'novels' that appeared to
focus on separate individuals of the tenchi 'household'. did a few
searches...nothing. nowhere.
considering the reference were from 2003, and seemed to be general
familiarity, i find this extremely odd, short of it all being a massive
misunderstanding on my part. but then, i do not recall seeing anything of
the sort as anime, and all the manga seems to be a repeat/original of those.
What am I missing?
