Yes, modern Christianity is moving toward  a mystic understanding of
what religion and Christianity is all about.  And yes that "union with
God" stance goes way back to when  Moses was knee high to a
grasshopper.
Be bold to adopt the old - tried and tested.   St. Paul who equated
the true believer as one "IN CHRIST"  thought so to.  God is
immediately
available to empower and forgive even in the heart of the lowest
sinner.
Exactly, the central message of Jesus, himself.

Modern progressives have one aim - unite folk with their ground of
being, that's God not any
tin horn idol caressed by ancient Canaanites.    Baal was connected
with fertility - sex
complete with Temple prostitutes.  Baal religion was a primitive
attempt to twist the arm
of the ultimate powers and get one's way - lots of wheat in the field
and tons of olives to

Modern progressives such as retired Bishop John S. Spong  have two
major trade marks
- a revised and believable  God and serving that God with real concern
for all humans
especially the heretofore downtrodden gays, blacks, .....
