Wednesday was European Competition Day, when the EU explains
the benefits of competition to the general public. In our
feature this week, Ben Van Rompuy from the Institute for
European Studies welcomes Commission flexibility in the
light of current economic difficulties. However, he also
points to a strong need also to boost the confidence of
consumers in the strength of EU competition enforcement.

The impact of anti-competitive practices on consumers like
you and me is in fact rarely considered in the application
of EU rules, says Mr Van Rompuy. A more "solid assessment
of how a certain conduct affects the final consumer" is
required. For in the end, it is always the consumer who
pays for the price-fixing of cartels.
