BE YE HOLY

About the Glory of Christ

To Know:

³Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered
their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were
flying. And they were calling to one another: ³Holy, holy, holy is the Lord
Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.²(Isaiah 6:2,3)

³Bill Boylan, what is the significance of the Hebrew ³im² ending on
Seraphim?² R.C. Sproul asked me that question as I sat unnoticed among five
hundred souls attending his seminar on holiness. There were two things about
me Sproul misjudged. First, he did not know that despite being a preacher I
am basically shy and might have frozen having been surprised by being asked
a question from the podium. Second, he did not know that he continued to
teach me long after he launched Ligonier and I was called to pastor the
Byfield Parish Church. In his teaching on Isaiah 6:2, R.C. made a point of
the fact that ³im² is a Hebrew plural. These angelic beings were created to
extol the holiness of God. Since I had learned much about holiness from him,
I gave R.C. the answer he was fishing for.

Like all creatures, Seraphim were designed to survive in their environment.
Heaven is the natural habitat of Seraphs. In heaven, the holy one of Israel
is visible, whatever visibility is to a spiritual being. The message sent by
the physical characteristics of the seraphs is that holiness is dangerous
for creatures. Seraphs are winged creatures. Like hummingbirds they are made
to hover. Hovering takes two wings. Why do Seraphs have four more? It is
because creatures cannot survive seeing the face of God. Neither can
creatures stand in his presence. When Moses met God in the Midianite
wilderness, he was told to take the shoes off his feet because he was on
holy ground. Also, although Moses was in the Lord¹s presence he was only
allowed to see his afterglow. Those who hope to see God must be holy as he
is holy.

Christ is the holy one of God. The apostle John tells us that in his vision,
Isaiah saw the glory of Christ. Will you and I see the glory of Christ? Yes,
if we accept God¹s salvation by which Christ suffers and dies for our sin so
that we might receive his holiness as a gift. This exchange is accomplished
by believing.
