TRUE WEALTH
About true luxury
To read the Bible in one year, today read John 19-21
To Know:
³When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her
luxury see the smoke of her burning they will weep and mourn over her.
Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: ŒWoe! Woe, O
great city, O Babylon, city of power! In one hour your doom has come!¹²
(Rev. 18:9,10)
Wall Street was breached in much the same way as the Great Wall of China. On
Monday, September 29, 2008, the stock market suffered its largest one-day
decline ever. On that day, congress cowered before the rage of voters.
Americans did not want the same government that stood silently by while the
barbarians ransacked their financial institutions to use their hard- earned
money to bail out the perpetrators. At least that is how the public saw the
government proposal to give $12,000.00 from every man, woman and child in
America to pay for greed.
In ancient times, when China became rich and cultured they feared a
barbarian invasion from the north. To protect themselves, the Chinese built
a great wall, sixteen hundred miles long, sixty feet wide, and forty feet
high. Three generations passed before the barricade was finished. Hundreds
died doing the work. Because a life of luxury corroded the Chinese spirit,
it was a simple thing to breach the wall. The barbarian invasion came, but
when they encountered the wall they merely bribed the gatekeepers. The enemy
waltzed through the gates and ransacked China.
Roger Babson was a famed financial expert. Also, he was a Christian.
Babson¹s insights into the working of the economy helped many to prosper
financially. Even so, Babson insisted that the secret to earning power was
character. In order to prosper, a nation must cultivate in its citizens
honesty, temperance, justice, and not a single-minded quest to live a life
of luxury.
To Do:
The Chinese built a great wall to protect their physical assets. They
neglected the inner man and lost both their treasures and their selves.
Jesus asked, ³What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world,
yet forfeits his soul?² (Matt. 16:26)
