A.C. is far from dead. But, at one time it ruled big time - way back in
pre-www days when usenet ruled simply because that's all there was. As a
general interest forum it still dominates; even with the spam & bullying
it's a great place to share ideas and pick the brains of some pretty good
bean heads.

Other forums have popped up; some are members only, moderated general
interest groups like CG & HB which parallel a.c. as far as content is
concerned, and some are narrow interest user groups like the Yahoo Gaggia &
Bunn groups, the Google Brewtus group, and the various green coffee buyers
coops.

These forums have taken some trafic away from a.c., but I don't see that as
a problem. There are only a few general interest groups to search for info
(too bad some of them have such *sucky* search engines), and specific
topics that are better covered in the dedicated subject users groups always
get directed to the correct forum.

Alt.coffee dying? Not yet - it's still an important cog in the coffee
wheel. And if someone doesn't wish to participate in one group or the
other, there's always a third or fouth option.

alt.coffee - charting the courses of all other coffee forums!
