The machines seem pretty robust, and if I am going to keep a close eye
on the roast, I may as well be able to do a big batch so I don't have
to spend all day on it.

Unless you drink a lot of coffee, do you really want to do "big batches"?
The advantage of home roasting for me is doing batches small enough to be
used up in less than ten days.  Since I'm using three or four different bean
varieties, I probably roast twice a week, less than one half hour per week
start to finish.
