It has been asked what Hugo Chvez has to do with coffee. Venezuela is producing about 870,00 (60 Kg) bags of coffee in the 2007-08 season. Less than 7% of the country's coffee is exported. This is a good thing because the President himself is reported by Barbara Walters to consume 27 cups a day. He also chews coca leaf. Venezuelan coffee exports Sep '07-Aug '08 is about 57,400 bags. Example of state controlled coffee-economics planning. In 2006 Chavez, whose government controls the price of all goods in his country, ordered coffee producers to pay farmers twice the price per kilogram of the previous year for their raw beans, while denying the producers and retailers a price increase when they sell the finished goods. The result were empty coffee shelves in Venezuelan retailers. Here in the USA, CITGO Petroleum Corp., the gas company controlled by PDVSA, the state-owned Venezuelan oil company is now offering Venezuelan Coffee in its gas stations in the US, in support of Venezuelan coffee farmer communes. The coffee is distributed by Golden Valley Farms, West Chester, PA. -Donald Schoenholt[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
