Lange’s relapse leads to rehab stint

That early-morning catnap Artie Lange took on the Howard Stern show 2
weeks back? It wasn’t due to lack of sleep. The troubled funnyman
admitted on the show this morning that he was nodding off because he
had relapsed and was using heroin again.

Lange said the relapse occurred several weeks before his U.S.O. comedy
tour to Afghanistan in late June, after falling in with "the wrong
crowd in Jersey," as he described it. He stopped for the Afghanistan
trip, but began using again "8 hours" after returning to the U.S.

He hit rock bottom while trying to make a hastily arranged flight to
do the Comedy Central Bob Saget roast on the morning of the roast - a
typical Lange story, sad yet sidesplitting. Comedy Central had offered
Lange a private plane with a doctor on board to ensure his
participation, but Lange checked himself into a New Jersey detox
facility instead.

("Who knew Comedy Central had that kind of budget?" Stern quipped).

Lange clarified the New York Post’s report that he was in an
outpatient rehab, a story he said his publicist fed to the paper for
"damage control." Since checking himself into the detox, Lange has
been under a doctor’s care, seeing him almost every day. Comedian
Richard Lewis, who had e-mailed Lange several months ago back offering
help with addiction recovery, referred the doctor.

Lange said he’s been off heroin for 8 days, and hasn’t had a drink or
drug of any kind, either.

"The goal here is stop everything, at least for a very long time," he
said on the air.

Stern he’s "really happy" for Lange and admitted he missed the obvious
signs of Lange’s relapse.

No word on when or if Lange will reschedule two stand-up shows he
missed last weekend, including a spot at fellow comic and Stern show
regular Rev. Bob Levy’s Comedy Club in Levittown.

After some conjecture that Lange staged the whole relapse episode to
get out of having to play Levy’s club, Lange said his friend Levy had
been understanding and supportive, albeit in his own unique way.

"Levy says, ‘Let’s get sober together,’" Lange related. "‘You want to
go out Friday night and not drink or something?’"
