I knew that Ian Fleming came up with some pretty lame -- at least in
retrospect -- working titles for his James Bond stories ("The Richest Man in
the World," "Mondays are Hell," etc.). But I did not know that "For
Your
Eyes Only" was originally called "Man's Work." Yikes!
There's a pissy little article from yesterday's Times Online, about how icky
a title "Quantum of Solace" is. The discussion is about even worse Fleming
titles, and "Man's Work" is mentioned:
"This risible title should never surface, thanks to the fact that it’s
already been made: Man’s Work was the story Fleming was going to call For
Your Eyes Only. FYEO seems to have been Fleming’s hardest-to-come-by title –
the author had also planned on calling it, among other things, Death Leaves
an Echo. Which isn’t bad, to be fair."
