SIN

About sin

To read the Bible in one year, today read John 7-9

To Know:

³The fool says in his heart, ŒThere is no God.¹ They are corrupt, they do
abominable deeds, there is none that does good. The Lord looks down from
heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any that act wisely,
that seek after God. They have all gone astray, they are all alike corrupt;
there is none that does good, no, not one.² (Ps.14: 1-3)

Sin is deadly serious. God is offended by sin no matter how slight. Sin
seems trivial when our hearts are hardened. The sinister Mrs. Mears is a
character in ³Thoroughly Modern Millie.² The woman heads a White Slavery
ring that traffics in souls. In the film Mrs. Mears mocks Millie¹s report,
that she was pinched on the street, with a sarcastic ³sinful.² Sin has
filled the earth with graves. At root sin is unbelief. It is the refusal to
believe God, his promises, his place in our lives, even his very existence.

In some church circles, sin is a word that is studiously avoided. Liberal
Christianity is rooted in the confidence that ³man is basically good.² Dr.
Robert Schuller, of Crystal Cathedral fame, wrote that the Reformers¹
emphasis on sin greatly damaged the western world.

Sin is universal. The Psalmist wrote, ³If thou, O Lord, shouldst mark
iniquities, Lord, who could stand?² Solomon agrees, ³Who can say, ŒI have
made my heart clean; I am pure from my sin?² Ultimately all sin is against
God. When David sinned by committing adultery with Bathsheba, the wife of
Uriah, God was the injured party. David understood this when he confessed,
³For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against thee,
thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in thy sightв (Ps.
51:3,4) Whenever we defy God¹s will we wound God.

To Do:

We who follow Christ need to cultivate confidence that we are forgiven and
therefore ought to keep the injury sin does to the Lord uppermost in our
minds whenever we are tempted.
