Three men convicted of using internet to plan rape
February 6, 2007 - 9:06AM

A British court has convicted three men of using internet chat rooms to
discuss a plot to rape two schoolgirls, and ordered them today to serve
long prison sentences.

David Beavan, 42, Alan Hedgcock, 41 and Robert Mayers, 42, were convicted
of conspiracy to rape, even though they had never met until after their
arrest. They had denied the charges.

However, they pleaded guilty to possessing pornographic images of children.

Southwark Crown Court heard that the men began discussing their plans on
internet chat rooms.

Judge Geoffrey Rivlin said records of their discussions were of the "most
lurid and disgusting kind."

"You were drooling over the prospect to take these children into the woods
and rape them," the judge said.

Prosecutors said the men had gone as far as to identify their targets, who
were aged 13 and 14, and to discuss where they would attack them.

Police were alerted to the plot by Beavan, who turned himself in at a
police station in January, claiming to be a "vigilante" gathering evidence
against pedophiles.

Rivlin said the men posed a "serious risk of physical and psychological
harm to children."

He ordered Hedgcock and Mayers to serve at least eight years in prison.

Beavan was sentenced to at least seven years.

"This case should act as a really stark warning that the internet is not a
hiding place to plan and participate in criminal acts," said Detective
Constable Dave Adams, of London's Metropolitan Police.

[And a warning not to inform on "pedophiles"]
