Hello, my fellow gang of "Internet" enthusiasts! My name is Wavy G. I am a frequent poster on this board. I am known for my off-beat brand of humour and my cheeky, thick-headed sense of phony self-importance. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, a city in the state of Ohio in the United States. My hobbies include bowling, beer drinking, and...well, I won't mention the third in case there are any ladies present (*wink*). Anyway, now that we got the small-talk out of the way, let me get to the point. I have always been quite a fan of Hollywood picture shows, as I am sure many of you are too. I especially enjoy the "Gangster" movie genre, but I have a small "problem" with this. (This is the focal point of this essay.) You see, I have a problem with the notion of "rooting" for a main character, when that character is a "gangster." This is someone who is in essence a vile--sometimes psychopathic--criminal. They have chosen a life of crime. They are by all other definitions of movie characters a "bad guy." But when they are presented as a main character in a gangster picture, they are supposed to be a protagonist, right? So we are supposed to "root" for them. I mean, this is what we're supposed to do when we watch movies, right? We are introduced to the characters, we get to know them, and we root for them. This is how movies work. So what are we supposed to do when we watch gangster pictures? Ignore the fact that the main character is a "bad guy"? This goes against everything that movies teach us. There are good guys, and there are bad guys. The good guys are supposed to beat the bad guys, and we, as the audience, cheer. But in these kind of movies, the good guys *are* the bad guys. My frigging head is spinning. For instance, I was just watching the classic 1990 moving picture "The Goodfellas." And every time I watch this, I really get into the big climactic part where Henry Hill is running around, strung out on drugs, trying to hide a stash of stolen guns, while trying to make dinner for his family and at the same time preparing to pull off a big drug operation later, all the while being tailed by the feds and just trying not to get caught. I have to admit, I'm on the edge of my seat every time. And then when the cops finally bust him, I always gasp. ALL THAT STUPID BITCH SISTER-IN-LAW HAD TO DO WAS GO TO THE AIRPORT AND GET ON A PLANE WITH THE DRUGS TAPED TO HER LEGS, BUT SHE JUST HAD TO GO GET HER "LUCKY HAT" SO SHE COULD FLY. AND HE GETS CAUGHT!@ SHE BLEW IT!!!!! So, you see my dilemma. What am I supposed to do? What do you guys do in these situations? I also always end up inevitably craving Italian food. I am confused. I need your help. Wavy G, at your service.[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
