beetroot sandwiches

Apparently some people in Great Britain eat "beetroot
sandwiches" before going to bed (source: Diaries of Adrian
Mole).

I bought a can of beetroots and ate some, sliced 1/8" thin, with
butter, on whole-wheat german-style bread. It was nice, but not
much flavor.

Is there a specific exact "recipe" for this rather simple-
sounding delicacy, and could some kind Brit provide it?
