Hello,

yesterday we had a horrible run in Mana-Tombs (normal). Looking back I
still have no idea why but the consensus seems to be that it was the
fault of the tank.

The group consisted of a level 68 warrior (def tank), 69 warrior (dd),
65 frost mage, 65 holy priest and my level 70 prot paladin. I just
joined because they needed one more.

The level 69 warrior, the mage and the priest are usually always playing
together. The tank was new, I've already played with the rest.

There seems to be some confusion about who was going to tank but they
preferred the warrior, which was fine with me. Second pull was already a
disaster. Tank was only able to hold one mob, rest came to the mage and
the healer. To make it worse summoned Mana Wraiths showed up and at this
time I used consecration to make sure they don't go for the healer. The
mage kept furiously sheeping mobs that were standing in the consecration
area. We wiped anyway and of cause it was my fault because I hit the
sheep :).

Shortly before the first boss it was decided that I should try tanking.
I think it wasn't so much the fault of the warrior that was supposed to
be the tank but more a problem that they didn't give him time to even
build aggro and the mage always pulled the mobs.

I tanked Pandemonius and died when the priest ran out of mana. Then the
priest died but the warriors managed to bandage and finish him. I guess
the mana problem was because everyone needed heals when they didn't stop
hitting the boss in his Dark Shell phase.

The group was pretty unhappy with the slow progression, as I had to sit
down after EVERY pull and drink. Had serious mana issues and I normally
didn't require a lot of healing and our DDs went all out right from the
start.

The mage really wanted to sheep things and I marked the mob he had to
sheep. He loved sheep pulls, usually doing it while I was still sitting
down and drinking. I told him not to do sheep pulls and I pulled with
AS, which slows the mobs and normally gives him time enough to sheep one
before they come too close. Didn't work very well - he needed quite a
while to sheep something. When it worked the sheep lasted not much
longer than 10 seconds at best and then came running to me.

I had to use consecration a lot - no focus fire (worked sometimes when I
marked the target with a skull long before the pull - during the fight
or shortly before the pull it seems to go unnoticed). Of cause the sheep
won't hold here (he tried it anyway) and I got blamed for it again :).

I noticed a lot of people haven't got the slightest idea how a paladin
tank works. I hate it when I just used consecrate and the mage
forstnovas the mobs before they reach me (and the DD each pick one mob
and start whacking away).
Another classic situation: Mobs are beating on you, you cast
consecration and the priest runs in and does an AoE fear. Priceless!

We wiped on the way to a second boss when we got feared and pulled two
additional groups. At least I can say I managed to hold aggro on
everything till the end ;). We learn from our mistake and plan to pull
the mob way back. I throw the shield and the mob slowly comes in my
direction (moved way back). Guess what: warrior charges him! Great, now
we fight on the same spot like last time. Just luck that we didn't wipe
again (got feared in the right direction this time).

After that we wiped on Tavarok. No idea what went wrong here and I have
to admit I don't know the boss very well. I had solid aggro on him but
then the mage died and shortly after that the priest. After that the
rest of the group, our damage wasn't exactly great. Still don't know why
the mage and the priest died. How big is his Earthquake? Can't you
maintain distance as a ranged class?

We ended the run here. They said they had done the instance 5 times
before (mage, warrior and priest) with random players and never had
problems with it. Took them hardly longer than 30 minutes most of the
time. I think this time it took us longer than 30 minutes just to reach
the first boss. As the group was pretty much the same it could have only
been the tanks fault - stupid bastard always hit the sheep.

I'm thinking of respeccing to holy, PuG runs are bad enough but
currently the guild runs are even worse. I get lots of whispers for PuGs
looking for a healer, sometimes for a tank but healers are in demand
more often (all raids are asking if I'm holy).

My healing gear is still pretty bad (850 +heal, 91 MP5, 12% crit) as I
just picked up what I found on the way. I'm not planning to do heroics
yet, would it be good enough for a normal level 70 instance like SH or
shall I first try getting better gear?

Dirk
