Hi everyone,

I have a question to ask. From my understanding, there are two way
to place the thumb on the back of the guitar neck:

1) one is the so-called classical style where a player can place or
press the thumb (the fleshy, fingerprint part of the thumb) on the
back of the neck.

2) the other is where you often see the thumb hooked over the neck,
as often a lot of rock and blues player do.

I've been playing some beatles songs lately on my electric guitar
(probably should be playing them on an acoustic instead) and I've
started to pay a bit more attention to where I'm placing the thumb on
the back of the neck.

I've noticed that at times, I sometimes do hook the thumb over the
neck, other times I press the fleshy part of the thumb on the back of
the neck (especially for barre chords), but I've noticed that there
are other times when I place the thumb somewhere "in between" these
two positions.

For instance, I was strumming through one of the more simplistic
beatles songs, "from me to you", and I started playing the opening
chords, but something that I noticed now that I'm paying attention was
that, while I was pressing the thumb against the back of the guitar
neck, the joint of my thumb was what was making the most contact with
the back of the neck, not so much the fleshy "pad" of the thumb. I
sometimes notice that sort of thumb "landing" when moving from
certain chords to others.

I was just wondering if that was a bad habit I need to break, or this
is not something to worry about or consciously correct as long as it
doesn't cause any pain or discomfort? Just wondering.

thanks
