As Americans, we pay more for our health care than anyone else in the world, by far, yet we rank as one of the worst, in terms of the health care results. Clearly, there's a lot of fraud involved, and a lot of people are making money from this, big time, and that's why they don't want to talk about it, and they don't want it reformed. Obama has noticed this, Bush (or any Republican for that matter) would never have noticed this, never in a million years. Yet one more reason why you should never vote for Republicans to public office, any office, and you should only vote for Democrats. Democrats are smarter, we look for solutions, while the other side only wants to perpetuate the status quo, the miserable status quo. What we spend on health care, each year, runs in the trillions of dollars, $2.5 trillion to be exact. According to a recently released report by Thomson Reuters, of that huge, huge amount which we spend every year, it is estimated that one third of it, about $800 billion, is in the form of waste and fraud. What this means is that we can save at least that much every year ($800 billion!!) if the system is reformed. See: http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE59P0L320091026?sp=true What this invaluable study proves is that if Obama succeeds in reforming our health care system, he will be saving us plenty of money, while at the same time improving our health care system. For example, as per this study, we have a largely paper-based system that discourages the sharing of medical records, and this not only wastes money, but it also harms your quality of care. Caregivers often duplicate tests, because results recorded with one provider are not available to another, consequentally, your medical staff are unable to give you the most appropriate treatment possible, because the relevant history of previous treatments cannot be accessed. This type of reform, it is estimated, would reduce health care costs by about 6%. And then there are examples of unnecessary care, such as the overuse of antibiotics and the over use of lab tests. This type of reform, it is estimated, would reduce health care costs by about 37%. And then there's fraud, it makes up about 22% of healthcare waste, or up to $200 billion a year in fraudulent Medicare claims, kickbacks for referrals for unnecessary services and other such scams. And then there is administrative inefficiency and redundant paperwork, which account for about 18% of healthcare waste. And then there are medical mistakes, which add up to a huge amount of unnecessary spending each year, which if reformed, it is estimated would decrease our health care costs by about 11%. And then there are preventable conditions, such as diabetes which also increase the cost of health care. The average U.S. hospital spends about one-fourth of their budget on billing and administration, compare that to our government run systems such as the VA or Medicare that spend anywhere from 2% to 5% on such overhead costs. And then there are the wasteful overuses of emergency rooms, e.t.c. Clearly, there is a LOT of fat to be trimmed from the system. A LOT of fat. Americans spend more per capita and the highest percentage of GDP on healthcare than any other country, yet we have an unhealthier population, with more diabetes, obesity and heart disease and higher rates of neonatal deaths than other developed nations. Change is needed very badly. The only people who recognize this are the Democrats. Republicans do not even understand this problem, in fact, they are a part of the problem. The people who HAVE been benefitting from all this waste and fraud and confusion, they are all Republicans. Aside from this excellent study, there are plenty of other examples of how the Republican fat cats have benefitted from this expensive and inefficient system that we have today. It's not the American tax payer who benefits, but the Republican fat cats. Such as the Pharmaceutical companies, it is one such example. We subsidize their research and development, with our tax dollars, so that they can come up with all those wonderful life saving drugs. And they then turn around and thank us tax payers for subsidizing their research by jacking up the price of these drugs, with the claim that they need the profits to do more research and development. Well, well, well. They lie. They use their profits to interfere with our democracy by subsidizing the campaign coffers of Republicans. They are more committed to putting Republicans in office than in saving the lives of the American tax payers who subsidize their industry in the form of corporate welfare. This is how they can perpetuate this wasteful and corrupt system of health care that we have right now, a system that's in desperate need of reforming, right now.
