newbie to p2p help

I was just turned onto p2p using Utorrent.

I have read that you should install  p2pguardian ( or something like ti) to
protect your PC.
Is there any truth to this and if so what is the most user friendly program
to use.

Also any other good site to DL from, it seems what I am using ( iso) does
not always have what I am looking for or should I just search the file with
torrent added to search name.
