iPod adapter for car radio

I just bought my first iPod and want to play it through my car stereo.
What's the story on the adapters I see that plug into the cigarette
lighter and direct the iPod to an FM radio channel? The ones I looked
at cost about $40.

I'm not an audiophile and the cab of my pickup doesn't have great
acoustics, so I'm not really concerned about concert-like sound
quality, I just want to know if the gadgets work and produce reliable
sound equivalent to what I get from my existing radio/CD player.
