Faced with that quandary, I tried every popular distribution around at the time on my Dell Latitude C600. I wound up selecting Mepis for the following reasons: 1. All devices worked from the get-go (except for the winmodem), including my PCMCIA Netgear wireless card. 2. KDE desktop. (Like you, I prefer it over GNOME.) 3. Mepis uses Synaptic package manager, which has been absolutely trouble-free for me. 4. It's a Debian-based release. After numerous update problems with RedHat and SUSE, I ruled them out.
