R&AW find points to global jihadi net

The revelation that the terror bosses sitting in Pakistan have been
funnelling funds for the Kerala LeT's operations through Hong Kong
has come as a shock to security agencies as well as the people of the
State. That the Pakistan LeT resorted to route money to their
henchmen in Kerala through Hong Kong when the direct link from Dubai
was compromised due to increased surveillance shows the importance of
the southern State in the global jihadi network. Security agencies
have consistently refused to see Pakistan-fed and Pakistan-trained
terrorists in Kerala as a vital link in the extensive network of the
LeT. The revelation by the Research & Analysis Wing should now force
a change in that perspective. In a sense, the shock the Kerala Police
has now received is a logical outcome of its neglect towards serious
warnings in the context of the incessant flow of hawala money from
the Gulf directly and through other cities in India at the turn of
the millennium. There were enough indications of dubious design even
then as crores of rupees were invested in real estate by virtually
unknown players. But the police and the Government chose to overlook
it, perhaps due to political compulsions.

The authorities have now woken to the reality that Islamic terror in
Kerala is not being sponsored and spread by a pack of illiterate
youth gone astray under the influence of some Pakistani terror-
preachers. The Dubai-based young men from the State are persons with
high academic credentials obtained from foreign universities. In
short, the jihadi operations in Kerala have been professionally
organised and sustained. After all, several of the post-2006 LeT
terror strikes in the country were planned and rehearsed in Kerala.
Kannur native Thadiyantavide Nazeer, South India commander of the
LeT, has told the National Investigation Agency that funds for the
2008 blasts in Bangalore came from Oman. The State police's
intelligence apparatus is only now realising that the size of the
population of Keralites in the Gulf, especially Dubai, recently
identified as one of the main LeT funding hubs, would make their job
all the more difficult. The revelation of the Hong Kong link, known
to have been used by Al Qaeda and other diabolic groups, should knock
them out of their shell of complacency. The revelation of the Hong
Kong link, known to have been used by Al Qaeda and other diabolic
groups that are part of the global terrorist network, should knock
them out of their smug shell of complacency as well as prove false
reports of ostensibly perfect religious harmony in the State.
