That's normal political strategy.  The candidate strikes an executive pose
and sends out surrogates to do the dirty work.

For examples look around these groups.  Obama made a presidential
statement that candidates' families are off limits while Obamaniacs fill
these groups with posts attacking McCain's wife and Palin's daughter.
Obama praises McCain's military service and thanks McCain for it while
Obama's surrogates call McCain's service incompetent and treasonous
