There are not a whole lot of deaths by starvation in the U.S. today.  If you
do a search for "starvation" at the census bureau, you won't find any
statistics for deaths by starvation.  Not that they don't occur, but clearly
they're not commonplace.

The vast majority of people below the poverty line have enough to eat most
of the time, a roof over their heads, usually one or more TV's, and much of
the time they will also have a car.  This is wealth beyond the wildest
dreams of most people 100 years ago and the majority of people in a lot of
nations (notice for the comprehension impaired I did not say the majority of
nations).
