The doctor who checked a Yoncalla man when he was brought to a jail in this city on the evening of Aug. 27 certified that Sam Botner was suffering only from superficial injuries. But less than 40 minutes later, Botner, 38, was declared dead. That information is contained in an official police press release that was given out by the Los Cabos police in the aftermath of Botner's death. The release has no details, however, about what might have happened between the time Botner arrived at the jail at 8:50 p.m. and when he was declared dead at 9:27 p.m. Botner, who was vacationing in Mexico with his wife, Kym, was taken to the jail after a confrontation with another man in the parking lot of the condominium where the Botners were staying. Kym Botner was on a nearby beach at the time and did not see the incident. She only learned what had happened later. Six police officers have been arrested in connection with Sam Botner's death, which has been on the front pages of local newspapers for days.
