http://buffalo.bizjournals.com/buffalo/stories/2009/11/02/daily9.html Joe Bruno's trial underway The criminal trial of Joseph L. Bruno, once the most powerful man in the New York state Senate, began Monday at a federal courthouse in downtown Albany. This afternoon, federal prosecutors and Bruno's defense attorneys agreed on a jury of seven women and five men. The 12-person group will decide whether to convict or acquit Bruno of the U.S. government's allegations that he committed mail and wire fraud while in office. Later Monday, prosecutors and attorneys will give opening arguments. The trial's first witnesses will also be called to testify. In January, an Albany grand jury indicted Bruno on eight counts of fraud. Bruno, a Republican who lives in Brunswick, pleaded not guilty. The maximum penalty is a $250,000 fine and up to 20 years in prison, if Bruno is convicted. .......................................................................................... .............................. Joseph Bruno, 80, served in the state Senate for 32 years representing parts of Rensselaer and Saratoga counties, including some of Saratoga Springs. He was Senate Majority Leader for the final 13 years of his career, which ended when he retired from office in June 2008. .......................................................................................... ................................ The 35-page indictment accuses Bruno of entering relationships with people or companies that had business before the state Legislature and then “concealing, disguising, and failing to disclose the existence and nature of such compensated contacts.” .......................................................................................... ............................ The indictment alleges Bruno engaged in a “scheme to defraud” by getting paid $3.2 million for work he did on behalf of labor unions and private companies that did business with the state, without disclosing that relationship to the Legislative Ethics Committee. ________________________________________________________ Harry[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
