OBSERVER'S HANDBOOK NEWS - OCTOBER 2009
-------------------------------------
RASC spoke with NYSkies today, October 29th, regarding the send
out of the Observer's handbook. You great astronomers continue to
send
in your requests and are now asking, 'Where's my book?'
This is a very fair question! First, know that your payment is
NOT
banked UNTIL we send you the book. period. You are not going to see
some nasty item on your October bank report with no book in your
hand.
RASC explained that this yea, the 2010 edition, is running late
at
its offices and printer. As at today it is still in press. It will
not
be ready for send out to its clients, like NYSkies, until early to
mid
November. RASC is not happy about this slip in issuance, but that's
the way it fell out for it.
I can answer here tow other inquiries. One is a bit of surprise
expressed that we can wait until banking your payment. Don't we need
the money to go and get the OHs? Most clubs collect and then use the
accumulated money to get the books from RASC (assuming they earn a
good discount). Why is NYSkies so accommodating to you to hold of
until we send the book to you?
Well, the short answer is that we put in for our supply back in
early September with up-front funds. That way we can get the book out
to you soonest it arrives in our house. Yes, it is a bit of an
expense, but business is business.
The other query is whether the OHs we offer, for the steep
discount to anyone without regard to number of requests, are 'real'
books or somehow photocopies or other cheap duplicates. The books are
the very ones printed by RASC, including the deep aroma of the ink
and
the snap! of the pages when you flip them. No, they are NOT from some
counterfeit shop.
You are welcome to send in your requests, even for a single copy
or a club's few copies. If your club collected only a few requests,
that's plenty enough for the Observer's Handbook. Oh, there's a third
inquiry to take care of.
One club collected from its members based on handing out the
books
at a meeting, It made no provision for shipping, so it assumed some
amount less than $20. Now it found it had too few for its own
discount
and wants to get the books thru NYSkies. Great! That's the right
attitude to take care of your members.
But what about the shortfall per book to make up to the $20?
Here's where you have to think a bit. Say (this is a made up example)
you took in $18 dollars for all of 6 requests. that's $108. At $20
for
us you need $120.
That INCLUDES the shipping to you. As you prefer we can send the
books to each member individually thru a list you furnish, or you can
take the books at a central address. Out of there you locally
distribute them books.
It looks like you can't grab our offer for being, um, 12 dollars
short. The $12 extra to fill out the requests -- and be good to your
members -- is there like a small cost covered by cheery
contribution.
Ask your club angel. You can't get lunch for two at McDonald's for
that!
The request form is at 'www.nyskies.org/oh.htm'.
