NYC EVENTS FOR OCTBER 2009
------------------------
John Pazmino
NYSkies Astronomy Inc
nyskies@nyskies.org
www.nyskies.org

The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring
enclosing
New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural
items of special importance to City astronomers are also included.
Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to
change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. Let the sponsor
know that you learned of its event thru NYC Events.
Frequently asked questions and explanation of NYC Events is at
'www.nyskies.org/nyc-faq.htm'.
You may ask for previous NYC Events thru 'nyskies@nyskies.org'
because only the current issue is in the website. It is replaced by
next month's issue.
For events which missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup
forum. Join NYSkies by visiting 'www.nyskies.org/yahoo.htm' and
picking either the email or website option.
All hours are Eastern daylight Savings Time.

International Year of Astronomy
-----------------------------
IYA is the commemoration of Galileo's use of the telescope to
explore the stars 400 years ago. A worldwide effort is underway to
promote astronomy to the public with increased visibility of existing
programs and running new ones. In the US, IYA participation for home
astronomers is thru the Night Sky Network of JPL and ASP.
To enhance visibility of IYA participants in NYSkies territory,
they are marked with an asterisk in the Index of Events. Please call
on them for astronomy advice, consultation, service. As new
affiliates
enter IYA, we'll flag them.

LCROSS collision on the Moon
--------------------------
In early September interest thruout the City heated up about the
coming collision of the LCROSS prbe onto the Moon to raise up,
hopefully, a cloud of water vapor. When on September 23rd word got
out
that India's Chandrayaan-1 lunar satellite helped confirm water
molecules on the Moon, well, interest boiled ovr!
Every one in the street wants to know what's going on! The
mission, as at end October, is proceding on schedule with no fatal
faults. For the definitive preparation for LCROSS there is the
NYSkies
Seminar on October 7th. Be there!
The crash occurs at 07:30 EDST on October 9th. CXan we see
anything from the City? No. The event is in DAYLIGHT, a half-hour
after local sunrise. You may have trouble seeing the Moon if there's
a
haze in the air. Tming of the crash favors Hawaii, with its cluster
of observatories, to watch the Moon in local night.
So far there is only one realtime event to witness the collision.
It's at Inwood Hill Pk, Manhattan. Manhattan? That's the forge and
crucible of astronomy in this part of the world.
However, there could be other realtime LCROSS events announced
after NYC Events goes to the world. Ask at your astronomy center for
latest news.
In the days following the impact, there surely will be public
showings of the LCROSS early results. Again, check around for
annuncements.

General news
----------
NYC Events readership continued upward during August as the
global
depression continues. Astronomers turn to NYC Events for low-cost or
free activities to continue their starry nourishment. In addition,
astronomers maintain that there is really only NYC Events to look
after the profession's public activities in the City region.
Amateur Astronomers Association continues to rub out hostile and
abusive behavior, letting its monthly lectures return to NYC Events.
They were dropped several years ago after a harassment incident
against a visitor at one lectures. The 2009-2010 lecture season opens
on October 2nd and runs generally on the first Friday thru May 2010.
Amateur Astronomers Association recently began a rolling set of
clearsky starviewing. Mostly in Manhattan parks, they start typicly
at
evening twilight. Both short runs and single sessions are staged. See
general notice under October 1.
Custer Institute revamped its program to include concerts,
dances,
plays. It now charges a fee that varies with the instant program.
Details are at Custer's contact.
Earth Institute at Columbia U seems to have no regular events of
astronomer interest. If any special ones come along, I'll note them
for you.
History of Science Society runs a new science-&-culture lectures
series at various places on Manhattan jointly with other history and
science groups. All are free but do mind the location.
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory's annual open house in OCtober
is
a casualty of the Depression. Here is Lamont-Doherty's notice:
'About Open House at LDEO
LDEO's Open House 2009 cancelled
It is with great regret that Lamont-Doherty has cancelled the
2009 Open House, a casualty of budget cuts caused by reductions in
the
Observatory's endowment income for the current academic year.'
Princeton University Astrophysics Department apparently dropped
its its colloquium for 2009-2010. It could be absorbed into several
new ones run by Institute for Advanced Study. I list only the main
meeting of IAS. Inquire at contact for the others.
SciCafe' is a new offering of the American Museum of Natural
History, an informal gathering of Museum staff and visitors in the
Hall of Planet Earth. No admission fee but there is a cash bar.
Visitors must be 21 years old and over, so please have ID with you.
Science Club of LI still hasn't updated its website since June
2009. In previous years it ran session thruout the year. I leave it
in
the Index of Events for contact.
Westchester Amateur Astronomers shifted its meeting time from
20:00 to 19:30. All other specs remain unchanged.
The Hudson-Fulton anniversary movement seems to run out of steam
and water (sorry about that one). One event that could have been a
marvelous spectacle was so badly publicized that probably no one
purposely attended.
On Sunday 13 September there was, I learned later, a parade of
Dutch sailing ships, including a replica of Hudson's 'Half Moon'
around New York harbor.
A tiny notice in a local newspaper alluded to cannon salutes that
may scare people but will be part of some Dutch ships visiting New
York. On the day after, an other small item mentioned the Hudson
replica being in New York harbor. and that was it.
I leave a general entry under October 1st, in case the Hudson-
Fulton organizers get their act together. In the meanwhile, please do
visit the 'Island at the center of the world' exhibit and walk the
'New Amsterdam trail'. See October 1st.

Event news
--------
NYSkies Astronomy Seminar on 2009 September 2 examined 'Epsilon
Aurigae is in eclipse!' with maps, articles, slideshow. The slideshow
was a printout of the digital presentation as a takeaway. Many
spinoff
topics relating to classical and home astronomy were also debated.
The September 16th Seminar featured 'Babylonian and Greek
astronomy' by Dr Alexander Jones. He showed the skills of the early
skywatchers and the ability to discover the main cycles of the Moon
and planets. Their work endures today in general skywatching methods.
The October 7th Seminar presents 'LCROSS, water, and you' two
days
before the collision event itself. The meeting is a World Space Week
event, one of only a dozen recognized in the United States as at end
September.
I proudly boast that there are three other WSW events in the
City,
Columbia University has two, a Friday lecture on the 9th and the
'From
Earth to the universe' exhibit. The third is an in-house school
program on Staten Island. Counting these up, it seems that New York
City has 1/3 of all the US World Space Week events!
Not bad for a place so commonly proclaimed unfit for astronomy by
man or beast.
Still all thru September there were no due and proper Apollo
events! October does have two at Cradle of Aviation on the 22nd,
hosting Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin, The daytime event is free,
outside of the museum gate for a book signing. The evening is a
fundraiser show with hefty ticket price.
The American Urban Star Fest was called off for clouds and rain
on
both dates, September 26 and 27. The latter was the raindate, which
NYC Events does not list. See the FAQ for explanation. The 27th was a
touch-&-go day with spells of clearing and clouding skies. Eventually
the clouds stayed put and it rained.
Remember the slogan NYSkies introduced at the World Science
Festival in June 2009? The one bannered across the handout of a 19th
century New York Labor Day parade? 'Stars are up! Atoms are down!
Make
New York a science town!' Well, it's science town for real in October
with a rally of films inspired by science themes. most are free but
require reservations. Others charge a modest admission. I grouped the
events under the opening day of October 15
New York is the ONLY place to host the IYA exhibit 'From Earth to
the universe' TWICE! We displayed it for World Science Festival in
June 2009 and now it's at Columbia University. This time it runs for
a
week in front of Butler Library.
Governors Island's last day of the 2009 season in October 11th.
If
you didn't get your visit in this yar, GO NOW. The ferry ride to
there is free on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. See October 2nd.
Two meetings seem to conflict, but they are actually coordinated.
UACNJ Symposium runs October 17-18 by day, then lets out until the
next day. NJ Starquest is on the 16-18 at night. The two are near
each
other, about 1/2 hour apart by car, so you can attend both.
Lodging and camping is at Starquest. Note well that the fees are
for each event separately. If you go to BOTH, Starquest gives a
discount. See contacts for the two meetings.
Please leave the Madoff benches in Central Park alone. I
appreciate that many readers really have it in for the fellow and
want
to vent their anger against the benches. So far, there seems to be
little physical damage but they are frequently messy from human and
pet toilet functions.

Sky news
------
Weather in September was mixed, with clear dry skies and
cloud/rain. We had a possible uncertain sighting of the Milky Way on
Friday-Saturday 11-12 September. Three reports expressed doubtful,
maybe threshold, views of the segments in Cygnus and Scutum. The
Milky
Way season ends on November 30th.
The Moon is now under renewed attention from the upcoming LCROSS
crash. City astronomers are boning up on selenography, lunar
geography, with charts and maps pulled out of storage. Altho there is
no visible activity on the Moon for the LCROSS crash, the target
crater Cabeus A is glimpsed quite on the lunar limb a little east
(astronomical) of the south point of the disc. A good lunar map is
needed for definite identification.
Mars creeps into the late night in October, hovering in Gemini.
He
rounds opposition in December, a remote one with a small disc.
The collision scar on Jupiter is all gone, at least thru smaller
scopes. It faded more quickly than those from Shoemaker-Levy-9 in
1994. Jupiter is in high south at nightfall in October, offering good
views thru most of the night.
Saturn emerges from solar conjunction with his north ring face
tilted to us. The rings are still pretty thin, yet easily
discernible.
Neptune is near Jupiter, who can be a good jumpoff point. You do
need a good chart of the area in northeast Capricornus to starhop
from
Jupiter to Neptune. use a planetarium computer program set for the
instant night.
