I have it in my mind to visit Cora Linn, an eighty something foot waterfall upstream from New Lanark on the River Clyde. I am sure that many of the visitors to New Lanark, which becomes busier each year with tourists, are unaware that there is a very pleasant shortish ramble from the old mill upstream to the falls of Clyde, Bonnington and beyond. To be fair, if you are older and perhaps not in full vigour, it may be wise to take the initial part of the walk with a little caution, using your walking stick if you must. For all of the way that you will be interested in, about 3 miles or so there is a made pathway, with the River Clyde flowing down in a gorge variously thirty or forty feet below you and to the right. The pathway tends to rise and fall quite steeply in places. At the head of Cora Linn and the other three smaller but significant falls in the cluster, the are little pools of deep and silent water, contrasting with the bursting falls themselves. All around the greenness of the trees is a sight for sore eyes. The little hydro power station on the bank, painted white, is a tidy example of how industry, on a small scale, and nature may compliment each other. Further up the river, the view opens out to a widish expanse where sheep are seen to graze. Indeed, I have been told that one may catch sight of deer at this place, but I have not seen them myself. It is a landscape that most of us really appreciate for its tranquillity, with flat places where a picnic may be had. When you return to the cotton mill, you may well be feeling a little peckish, and there is a cafeteria and toilets for your comfort. All in all, New Lanark's mill, the surrounding grounds and exhibitions together with this little Ramble make for an excellent day out at modest cost. The Scottish Wildlife Trust has a little outpost here with relevant items available for purchase. http://www.bartleby.com/145/ww410.html Poem of Cora Linn by Wordsworth. http://www.swt.org.uk/wildlife/fallsofclyde.asp Scottish Wildlife Trust http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/lanark/newlanark/index.html New Lanark G --[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
