I am looking for a couple of pieces of software for Linux and OS/X that will allow me to use USB and/or built-in microphone and cam devices through the command line. Ideally I would like to be able to, through a command line invocation, create .jpg/.png/.tiff/whatever still shots, and create video clips of arbitrary length in whatever format that I can later re-encode if necessary. My requirements for audio are similar, although I don't need to capture just one frequency at any point, it'll just be audio snippets. Unfortunately I haven't been able to turn up anything helpful in google so far. My google-fu is admittedly pretty weak, though. On a tangent, I'm not sure if something that will be able to do this on a Linux box utilizing USB devices for recording will be able to work on my MacBook. It'd be great if I could use the same piece of software across the platform difference, but I don't think that's gonna happen. I'd really appreciate any help or pointers in a good direction.
