Ividently I missed some critical episodes of "the beverly hillbillies"-- otherwise I would have known what a coon dog is when I saw one at the Ferrum folklife festival. I was in the midst of a huge smile at what I learned frommy friend--it has nothing to do with racial epithets. I am in the bible belt, and it seems that I was missing a thing or two regarding your neighbors. The folk that I have encountered in roanoke were swift to tell me that nothing was likely to happen around there. It is a funny term, but some of my friend's wife's older relatives have talked about hunting and fishing and wouldn't you know it, coon hunting. One more reason us city folk are ever grateful to be so. There are some really crude terms that are racial epithets. "Coon" alone, is one, but i do not know if that is so in that neck of the woods. I would likely have to dig a little deeper for the folklore. There is an episode of the twilight zone about an old codger and his dog, not one of the better episodes, but, hunting dog and all. It reminded my friend of the time he went to a county fair. It was weird, he said, oxen pulled sleds or something in contest. Isaw the same contest with horses pulling those things. I had no idea those animals were so huge! Dray horses that do this are even bigger than the largest work horses I ever saw in any show. My friend saw kids sleeping with pigs---there, he said, you can be a meatatarian with little to inconvenience oneself. I remember that at the folk life festival, Bush was supposed to show up. Amazing that the presidential candidate did not show up. I am still feeling the snub so many years later. Speaking of "coon dogs". I remember that there were many folks that solicited nader not to run. I intended to vote for nader. I could not stomach the other two. I did do not care if bush won, i felt that his winning would become an anethema to white folks and until that happens, nothing will happen here in america. Maybe we are on the verge. Even his perceived Saddam victory, arising from the conviction of Saddam to die by hanging somehow has not heated up the voters as much as one would think. The hanging does not redress anything that hurt anyone in US directly except perhaps folks who lost family in the war. That's the closest, but you would think this would fuel folks to vote democratic in this mid term instead. Something like how nader talks about prison reform--there will be none until such time as white collar crooks wind up in jail. Them first before Saddam and maybe Bush and his party would do better this year. Any fool knows that Saddam will appeal til he is dead of natural causes. His trials and appeals will cost us a lot of money. This tracsk the Milosevic deal perfectly. Another thought on the folklore. I think that a lot of those folks would define "hobby" differently than you or I. Or even a bunch of other yankees. I am still smiling at finding out about the true nature of the coon dog. If I ever get up to a coon dog race again, I will bring my 30 06. We'se fixin' to have a rat hunt ....[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
