Ok, this is a bit off topic, but I figure someone here might be the expert on the subject. The folks in the Greyhound adopton world are unaminously of the opinion that tethering a greyhound will inevitably lead to it's death by broken neck. They do have something of a point, the Greyhound can accelerate at approximately 2.5 m/s^2, reaching their top speed of 14.6 m/s before they reach the end of the average 10 or 20 foot tether. Even though Greyhounds should not be left outside for long periods, the ability to tether a dog is very useful to owners that want to take their dogs on picnics, campouts, or the like. I think it should be possible to tether a greyhound safely if sufficient shock absorption was provided in the tether, and/or a harness was used in place of a collar. The Greyhound adoption folks that post the information about tethering do not wish to investigate this possibility, for fear that people will use it to the detriment of the dogs (leaving them tethered outside for long periods) instead of their benifit (taking the dog more places because you can safely secure them to a tree or stake wherever you go.) So, with an acceleration of 2.5 m/s^2 (almost 1/4 gravity) and a mass of around 70 lbs, and a max length of 20 feet, what kind of bungee would provide the shock abosroption needed? Could enough absorption be provided for this to work with a collar, or is a harness needed? What kind of harness? (There are dog harnesses designed for pulling a load, that may be safer for this than the ones designed for just walking on leash.) How fast would a bungee wear out under frequent light load conditions? I expect most dogs would rather pull the bungee taunt than be restricted in their movement. What is the injury potential if a bungee meeting the above reqirements got tangled around a leg before the animal accelerated?[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
