First off I just want to say, I play handball not racquetball, but it should be similiar in concept. I noticed something about racquetballs and my ability to play, and I am wondering the "reason" why it is. There are two 'types'/condition of balls: Older balls (older not as in made in 1920, but as in not right out of the can, couple of weeks/months old) - still has a good amount of grip, not hard (when you squeeze it with your hand), and has a good bounce. Newer ones - still has a lot of grip, a little harder (tougher to squeeze with hand) and bounces more. If you held one of each ball in your hands at shoulder height and dropped them, the newer one would bounce maybe 1/2 inch higher. (not that BIG a difference) I play best with the older ball, for some reason with the newer ones my shots dont work. Example - I played this weekend and was up 8-2 hitting all my shots, the guy asked for a newer ball...next thing I knew, I lost every point and was down 9-8, and was Aced twice. I used to think this was because Im not a super low ball killer. I am the first to admit, most people I play against hit harder, hit lower, hit a lot more kills, are faster, but I still beat them. I do hit a lot of kill shots, but my game is mainly - make the guy run by hitting left/right/front/back/etc, make him defensive so I get a setup. Of course I am always aiming for kill shots while making him run, but the kill shot is secondary...if it kills even better, if not, he is going to have trouble getting to the ball anyway. So I used to think that older ball is better for me because it helps my kill attempts by not bouncing back as high. But the people I usually play always go for kills, so wouldnt it help them also? I notice that my aim is off with the newer balls also. I am pretty good about (1 wall handball example) hitting cross court and having the ball hit low on the wall, bouncing next to the line and then going off the court. But with the newer balls, it hits the wall and goes out...so its like the ball lands a foot wider with the newer balls. Or if I am on the left side, I can pull the ball and hit a kill in the left corner. But with the newer balls I end up hiting the ball out and its waist high. That is a BIG difference. Im not really sure why there is such a difference in my shots with the newer balls. Is it the bounce of it...or the fact that its harder, so its like Im hitting with a racquet with tighter (or looser?) strings? Thanks[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
