The very first episode of TNG has the lead characters going on about how "ridiculous" it was that people in Earth's history wore "costumes" and (hah hah, funny) fought wars over economic systems. The author was simply *stupid* when it came to such things -- ignoring the fact that one economic system says it's the duty of the State to take everything from people who produce and give it to those who don't, while the other values individual freedom and responsibility. But I digress. The point is that the whole idea of "military" and Starfleet is simply absurd in TNG.
