Abrams Promises A Politically Relevant Star Trek 2

Abrams Promises A Politically Relevant Star Trek 2 If there was anything
to complain about with the recent Star Trek film, it was that J.J.
Abrams, in his effort to make the franchise feel fresh again, abandoned
the intellectual side of things, getting away from Star Trek's previous
efforts to deal with modern social and political issues.

Abrams has heard your complaints, Trekkies, and promises that the second
film will probably go a little deeper than the flashy first. Talking to
The L.A. Times, Abrams promised that the second film will have "a very
different mission."

"It needs to do what Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It
needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what
is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides
the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving
story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn't mean it should
be pretentious. If there are simple truths -- truths connected to what
we live -- that elevates any story -- that's true with any story."

Roberto Orci, one half of the screenwriting team that will write the
second one, echoed Abrams' thoughts. "We got a lot of fan response from
the first one and a considerable amount of critical response and one of
the things we heard was, ‘Make sure the next one deals with modern-day
issues.’ We’re trying to keep it as up-to-date and as reflective of
what’s going on today as possible."

If there's a moral to this story, it's that yes, the people responsible
for Star Trek right now are very smart, and very geeky, and still
deserve your respect. Trust in Abrams, and he will probably reward you
with something brilliant once again.

My take:

Maybe Trek XII will be something like Cloverfield: Show an entire movie
from the point of view of somebody's tricorder.
