Just watched "The Visitor" for the first time in years today. Wonderful episode, but I couldn't help thinking, in lieu of later events in the series, that the altered timeline was actually better for the Federation as a whole. The accident that throws Sisko out of time happened two years before the Dominion War. This war, as far as we can see, does not happen in the "Siskoless" universe. Apparently, without Sisko around, this war never happens! I don't know what specifically Sisko does that makes the war inevitable, perhaps something like McCoy saving Edith Keeler from the car accident alters history. Of course, elderly Jake would have no way of knowing this when he fixes his father's problem. If he did, would he sacrifice his father rather than let so many others die in a war? As a further point, apparently (indirectly, of course) Sisko's presence also causes Jadzia Dax to be killed by Dukat, since we see the elderly version of her in the alternate timeline.
