Folks,

I realize this was posted more than 5 years ago. I came across it
accidentally this morning while searching for something else, and
found nothing more recent.

First, despite my handle, I am NOT a medical doctor. Second, NAYY.
I'm posting this because I'm one of the people who had extraordinarily
good results with the diet, and IMO, it's worth a try, and AFAIK it
can't do any harm. When I was first dxed w/ CD, I took a rapid
downhill course. The dxing gastroenterologist prescribed asacol,
which only exacerbated my symptoms. When I would complain (every week
to 2 weeks) he would up the dose. It got to the point that I was
bleeding 1-2 oz. / day, had incapacitating cramps, and every other
classic symptom to an acute degree. I was in the bathroom 15-20 times
a day. Within just a few months, the doc wanted to admit me to the
hospital, put me on pred., and cut out 1/3 of my colon. It was about
this time that I took matters into my own and found the SCD. I put my
foot down to the doc, refused further treatment, and quit the meds. I
followed the diet precisely, and within 3 weeks, my condition improved
by 50%. Within a few months to a year, I was in complete remission,
was able to *slowly* go back to my regular diet, and have been in
remission ever since (~8 years) with only a handful of very minor (1-2
day) flares. I take no meds for CD whatsoever. I do take vitamins.
I have not had a flare in 5 years. I can eat anything I choose.

There are some who will argue spontaneous remission. Possible, but
not likely IMO (too many reasons to enumerate here & now).

The diet is VERY difficult to follow, but if you go that route (or
have), you MUST be diligent/meticulous - no "mistakes" - and patient.
My results are probably not typical - I was one of the lucky ones.

One thing that amazes me to this day is that despite how long this
diet has been around, very few docs acknowledge or admit knowledge of
its existence. Hmmm. ('Nuff said)

I don't follow the newsgroup; as I said, this was an accident, so I
won't be around for discussion. But if the diet only helps a few like
me, IMO, it's worth the try.

Best wishes to all.

Oh, the pain... THE PAIN...
