I hope you have a nice break. I teach (college math in my case) as
well and really struggle with the issue of grading. I don't feel
worthy to judge other human beings but at the same time I can't ignore
the fact that some students study work harder and learn more than
others. My solution is to grade leinently but not too leinently. I
want my classes to be easy to pass (D or above) with almost any honest
effort, even for the mathematically challenged and thus I reserve
failing grades almost exclusively for students who blow off attending
and/or doing any homework. I also want students with a reasonable
amount of understanding to be able to get a C or a B without undue
stress. Finally, I want to reserve A's for students who really are
above average so that the grade doesn't become meaningless. I don't
always suceed, but most students find me a fair enough grader.

Do you ever find dissociative symptoms interfering with your teaching?
Sometimes I teach on autopilot and feel pretty surreal when I'm
standing in the front of the room at the chalkboard and notice these
words coming out of my mouth.
