To quote the previous message you are replying to, do NOT click the
"Reply" link under the message.

Instead: (1) click the "show options" link at the top of the post. A
box will appear, showing several options - reply/ reply to author/
other things.

(2) click the "Reply" link in the options box. The full text of the
message you are replying to will then be included in the composition
box, marked with angle brackets (>) at the start of each line.

(3) put your responses where they make sense, commonly in between the
lines of the quoted message, and snip any parts of the message you
aren't replying to, making sure you leave the name of the person
you're answering, and at least a little bit of context for your
answer.

(4) post.
