Hi all.I am a late 40`s male who has long suspected having a non verbal learning disorder.I have been underemployed all my life, financially and emotionally exhausted and pretty much at my wits end. The more I have researched the more sure I am of my disability.I am trying to get to the root of my recurring depression/anxiety and I thought that a diagnosis would help me "take ownership" of my condition . So, I go to my family doctor, who first diagnosed my depression in `02. I explain that I think the root of my depression lies in NVLD, and ask for him to refer me to someone who can do an assessment. Her explains that only a psychologist can do that, and the waiting lists are 8 to 10 months for local psychologists that deal with OHIP (of which there are only 5 , one of whom is retiring in 4 months, in a city of 100,000), of course, he did offer to refer me to a psychologist in his practice , starting at $150.00 an hour. That is not an option for me so I ask for a referral to the local Community Mental Health clinic. So, off I go the the clinic. The psychologist(?) Interviews me and it becomes apparent that she thinks I have already been assessed with NVLD, suggests that I need to go back on anti-depressants, and have I considered going back to finish my high school diploma as a lot has changed in 30 years and it might open up some "employment avenues" When I explained that the reason I was there was for an assessment for a learning disability, I was told "we don't do that here" and that as I was not an immediate threat to myself or the community(ie suicidal or violent), they could not help me.ESPECIALLY if I was unwilling to go on meds. Ok, fair enough, obviously these folks are so back logged with clients that they need to have this criteria.I leave with only a list of OHIP- friendly psychologists, feeling guilty for wasting her time, and wanting to head butt my G.P. So back home to hit the web and the phone. I try calling the psychologist I was seeing during my last bad patch to inquire about a "psycho-educational assessment and she says she is not willing to do the assessment and gives no reason. She did offer me an appointment, once I got a second referral from my family doctor , of course(???) but with the 8 month wait and her retiring in August I didn't see the point. Any body have any ideas/methods re: getting an assessment in south west Ontario?Without it costing $1500.00? thanks[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
