Amazing....
That training yet is given to try and make clientele contact better and
more caring, I am sure. Only, whoever made up the training class and
probably has some uni degree in PR completely missed the boat.

And yes, it must be a pain as an employee to have to serve people comments
like that, ask them the mandatory question. It is actually infringing on
their freedom of speech, me feels. Awful for them and clients feel like
they are taken for imbeciles. The question sounds so artificial that we
react negatively to it, feeling a lack of caring intent in it. And the
person saying it says it because they HAVE to, which kills the very
spontaneity that human contacts are all about.

Once in a grocery store, I fell on a teen, a 17 year old, male cashier,
who asked the mandatory ÔHow are you today'.

I decided to play with h9im, and hoped he woudl join...after the intial tilt.
t went like this:

-How are you today?
-Hi!!! Fine! How are YOU?!:)
-....??,...I...Fine....
-And your parents??
-...Fine......You know my parents?
-Nope. But you do not know me and you ask me how I am today, like you knew
me from previous days. Therefore, I am returning the favor:). So how ARE
your parents?
-....Huh...Fine....
-Really? You do not sound so sure....
-(startign to half smile, not sure he is allowed to play back, at first)
-And your uncle?
-...(again wodnering if I know his family or what, unsure...)....?? He
is...fine....
-Do yu still have that dog, what was its name....?
-...?...hehehe:)....(startign to dare try and play back, seing my amuzed
playful face) -Rex? Yeah, we still have him! He,s doing great. As a matter
of fact I took him for a walk today.
-Did you, now? Still walk him every day?
-...Nah, he now lives...with my uncle....:):)
-LOL:) Glad to hear that. That must help him with his arthriis, having to
walk the dog each day...
-Yup.

We exchanged a bit that way and after a moment or two of hesitation, being
tilted, he ended up making me laugh so good he was at improvising along,
with the dfg now living at his uncle and oher things he said after that:):).

So maybe the next ime someone absolutely NEEDS a comment about the pants
youw ant to buy, start improvizing a commercial, holding the pants up,
using yourr free hand to show the pants in a presentation motion, palm
opened, and put a huge smile on your face so that they get the idea that
you are not mockng them but playing along/inviting them to play along and
have a giggle at work.

Or if they bug you with 'Can I help you' when you are just looking around,
just answer soemthign like 'Oh my....You so could. I need someoen to cut
my toe nails. Can't reach them anymore. Not that I have back problems, but
that they were just neglected and are now so long that my arms are not
long enough for me to reach them and cut them...' or saying soemthign so
big like that that they ahve to figure out you are joking playfully and
not intending to mock them.

After a few tilt, they may join the fun:).

If not, I betcha htat after ey try again with ÔCan I help you', and you
answer soemthign like 'Yes. As soon as I am done looking around, I will go
to my car and bring you my dirty laundry. You can do that on your lunch
hour for me, and I will pick them up at 1 P.M. That would really help me'.

If they insist on sayign that they mant 'hlp with the shopping', say they
sure can and either say that what woudl really help was if theywoudl put
those on their own credt card, or say that yes, you are claustrophobic and
can not get in a cabin to try those on, so woudl they mind going to try
them on for you?' or anything else that makes them have to start wodnering
if you are not joking, and maybe play along.

I tell ya, most people are so caught up in ths sort of brainwashing sales
technique thing that more han half can not find a thing to say, tolted
completely. Like a robot that woudl not have been taught those 'lines'
or emotions.

I reember actually doing this in my forst job as a civil servant, a t4emp
job where I was supervising peoplecorrecting the dots on the national
census questionnaires people filled, but soemtimes without making the dot
wide enough to be electrnically read. Imagine hwo monoonous a job that was
for them??

So on paday, as they ahd to fill their time sheet, I asked them to write a
comment of any kind, trying to make it humour, in the section 'commentÔ on
thetime sheet. I just found that comment box idiculous, like one coudl
comment on their pay or check for real. Therefore why not play along with
the question they were sure no one woudl ever bother filing and write some
comments.

At forst, half the team coud find NOTHING at all to write. 25% or so write
ÔHi. How are you today'. The rest wrte different studff like that save a
few who wrote ÔI do not know what to write in that comment section. ' and
similar things.

Next pay day I insisted again. It took maybe hree times for them to start
feeling liek they coudl write a comment there. The skies did not fall on
them after the forst times, so it was safe, sort of thing.

It ended up with the people at Pay and benefits coming to see who that
etam was on ste (sic) and just saying they were too curious about that
bnch of funny people that wrote comments in the comment sections, sayign
hwo they looked forward to our team,s sheets and foght for who would get
to process them, to have a few giggles with us.

Perhaps a few of those employees coninued using the space thatw as
technically planned to remain blank by ood old PR people with uni degrees,
and carried that new habit on to new jobs.

All I know is that the employess wodl spend time thinking as they did
their dots about what they woudl write on their next time sheets, and
started enjoying work a bit more just out of that: darign to speak up
more, one asked if it was okay f he brought music. No problemo.
Another asked if they coudl take a break each hour. I id no. They coudl
take a break anytime they needed to rest their arm and until their mind
coudl again be able to think, reminding them of hwo they could not even
think up a sentence before they managed tow rite comments on their
paychecks, No one abused it. They were so glad about it that they did not
weant to change teams. Other people started asking ther boss to be on our
team:).

We started making fun on the floor with gluing stars on tams that did the
most dots in a week, when we found them to fall for the production threats
of the boss we then had, who offered a star system to reward the best
team. Soem surppervisrs woudl actually paralyse their workers arms to do
the most dots they could in a week, withut proper breaks.

The got to know in time that whatever supervisor ''whipped'' their team
thatw ay wodl see my team come hand them a star, which mader their entire
team giggle knowing we were not making fun of them but of their inhumane
supervisr, where I then woudl ask that supervisor to please autograph my
book, having bought a real authograph book for the purpose:).

I rememebr some fuming supervisors, taking their jobs so
seriously:)...upset that we woudl sort of remind tem of how silly that was
for a job to start with, that we did it, sure, but remaining human beings
whiel doing it.

My team had a great production level anyway, without even trying, because they
could have fun at work, instead of be bored out of their souls.
Above average, but without being prompted to work more, faster, etc, etc.

They coudl do dots with their eyes closed, so to speak. Not a brainy job.
So we all woudl chit chat as we did those, and got to knwo each other.

Jut breaking the Mc mentality or the Wall Mart brainwashing training by
reminding them of the human side, not in stating so but in acting so, can
make tings better for them and us too.

When I saw the male ashier a next time, he remembered me, if my own mind
was elsewhere. -How are you doing today?
-Fine, did I answer mechanically, my mind elsewhere.
-And your parents?:)
-....?? Oh, hi! Sorry! Hehehehehe:) Was my turn to be caught up in being a
robot:). Parents are fine. By the way, my mom asked me to tell you to tell
your mom that she will not knit her slippers this xmas.
-Aw......Mom will be so disapointed...Does the same apply to my uncle?
-Hello? Of course not, sicne my mom left with your uncle, as you surely
heard gossiped around.
-etc, etc, playing along and REMBERING to play.

Who kows? Maybe eh asked other clients in those weeks 'How are you today?
Fne? And your parents? And your dog?':):)
