DVD player problem

Hi All

I've got a Philips DVP520 player, and it's suddenly stopped showing
any on-screen selectors or subtitles, the menu selectors I can just
about live without (by guessing what is selected), but I watch a lot
of foreign language DVDs, that are now useless with out it being able
to display the subtitles.

When I press the subs button on the remote the different languages
available (and the 'subtitles off' marker) show at the top, but the
actual subs themselves do not show.

Any ideas on how to fix this, or the technical names for the on-screen
stuff so I can try further research myself.
