Issue Regulations: Operation Arc Light http://www.amervets.com/ops/o-arclit.htm#isr 18 Jun 1965 to 15 Aug 1973: Awarded For Service During the Operation Period To provide close air support for ground infantry B-52D heavy bombers were converted to the B-52F Stratofortress to carry 30 tons of conventional bombs. The first use of these heavy bombers in Southeast Asia occurred on 18 June 1965. Missions were commonly flown in three-plane formations known as "cells" and were also employed when ground units in heavy combat requested fire support. Releasing their bombs from 30,000 feet, the B-52s could neither be seen nor heard from the ground as they inflicted horrific damage. B-52s were instrumental in nearly wiping out enemy concentrations besieging Khe Sanh in 1968 and An Loc and Kontum in 1972. Between June 1965 and August 1973, 126,615 B-52 sorties were flown over Southeast Asia. During those operations, the U.S. Air Force lost 31 B-52s: 18 from hostile fire over North Vietnam and 13 from operational causes. http://www.amervets.com/ops/o-arclit.htm#isr NOTE: Eligible personnel should ensure this Service Period acknowledgment is listed on your current 201A Military Award Report: http://www.amervets.com/201areq.htm (or... amervets.com/201a) Contact Person for this posting: Roger Simpson, PIO Public Information Office: http://www.13105320634.com The American War Library: http://www.amervets.com/ 16907 Brighton Avenue Gardena CA 90247-5420 Phone / Fax: 1-310-532-0634 -- Otis Willie (Ret.)
