I suspect that my project needs MySQL and PHP, but I am a beginner at both. I am looking for some basic tutorials to start with... I already know HTML, etc, for static pages. The project is a sort of directory, with search functions. I want drop-down boxes, and also a text box. The upper levels are geographical areas. The next level is a category. Each page returned will be a list of results. Each result will be a text link (to an outside site) plus a few paragraphs describing the stuff at that link. OR, people can type in some search terms to a search box, and get the listings. For example, an end-user can see some drop-down boxes. They can select, "West Island," Then, "Metropolis City," Then, "Specific-Type" Then, click "Submit" And then, they will receive a results page, with the individual text-link-and-description listings. It is similar to if you wanted to list all of the plumbers and electricians in the country, and visitors select the state/province, city, and type of service. What Is Your Region--> What Is Your City--> What Do You Want Also offered would be a text box where visitors could type, "metropolis city plumber" and get the relevant listings. I would also be interested in ideas about organising this with static pages, in a directory structure. Including directory- building scripts - preferably free. This could be set up for a short time while learning the more technical search/DB details. I am NOT soliciting for anyone to offer paid work. I want to learn to do this myself, and it is definitely a NON-profit type focus.
