Favicons

Hi all,

I am looking to create a favicon for a site. I think a lot has changed
with these since I last looked at them.  What size can the file be?
Will 16 X 16, 32 X 32 or 64 X 64 pixels work?  Also, does the file
have to be .ico or can gif and png work for all browsers nowadays?
Finally, if I want it animated what is the best approach - use an
online tool?
