(I'm a newbie, but this group looked like it might
be appropriate; sorry if I'm wrong. My post is in the
nature of a rant, but does contain some questions and
comments for which this groups might be a good
place to get answers and comments.)

I finally got Internet at my remote home but
it's "only" 115kb/s and I'm having some trouble.
("Only 115kb/s" seems odd because this old fogey
remembers when 4.8kb/s was considered fast!)

There's a fast satellite option I'll probably
switch to eventually, but let me ask about
the problems I'm having now. (Bottlenecks at
my ISP may be more relevant than the "slowness"
of 115kb/s, as I get better performance at some
times of the day (or rather, times of night!)

Gmail:
I need to switch to Basic View for speed, but
can no longer open mail! (When I point to a
message I get the wrong kind of cursor for
the click I need.)

Workaround: I select View Source; locate the URL
string to access that message and cut-and-paste
the URL into the Location Bar! Works fine, but
it seems highly doubtful that that's the interface
Google intended.

Google Groups:
When Viewing as Tree, I can't see all of Messages
10, 20, 30, etc.

Workaround: There are simple workarounds; it just
seems unfortunate that web-programming / browsing
is so complicated that even
We're_Smarter_than_You_and_Do_No_Evil, Inc.
can't get it right.

My own website:
Although my popular webpage
http://james.fabpedigree.com/mathmen.htm
has grown to 200+ kilobytes counting images,
it works fine! It takes several seconds to
finish loading but this doesn't matter as one
starts reading at the top. I'd like to brag
that this speed is due to my webdesign skill,
but the *exact opposite* is the case: My
page loads because my html is too simplistic
to cause any trouble.

Newspaper articles:
I start at Google News and click on articles
of interest. I'm gradually learning which
newspapers to avoid: they take *almost forever*
to load. After half a minute, I'll still only
see one banner ad.

Workaround: I was a little surprised to discover
that View Source often works here too! Even
though it's not displayed in the main window, the
View Source will often have the text of the article
of interest. (Or, a one sentence summary with a
URL showing me how to get to the real article;
although this seldom, if ever, happens on articles
linked to by Google News.)

Perhaps there are better workarounds (Google Hacks?)
to use before I upgrade my Internet connection.
Anyway, it does seem rather silly that the Internet
has "evolved" to the point where View Source is
the only way to cope with at least two different
problems a slow-connection user will encounter
repeatedly.
